Flu Prevention for Kids
When we have a large number of pupils in classrooms together, it can be hard to keep them from spreading germs. This is particularly true of the flu. However, there are steps parents can take to teach their child to avoid catching the flu, as well as spreading it to others.
Teach your child to always cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze. The best way to do this is to use a handkerchief or a tissue. Please always pack these in their school bag. If the child has no tissue on hand, teach them to do a "vampire sneeze" or "Dracula sneeze." To do this, they should bring their arm up and cough/sneeze into the inside of their elbow. When they do this, they'll look just like Count Dracula bringing his cape up in front of his face.
Hand-washing is very important in keeping healthy year-round. This is especially true during cold and flu season. Teach your child to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizer can help kill germs, as well. Also remind your children to avoid touching their eyes, mouth, and nose because this is how germs are introduced into our bodies.
This tip works in two ways. First, if your child sees someone who is sick, they should keep their distance to avoid catching germs. Second, if your child is sick, please keep them at home so that they can get the rest they need to fully recover and avoid making healthy pupils sick.
